4 Out Of 5 Habits That May Hinder Your Success In The Exams

Failure is attributed to different factors but their there are some which are common and repetitive for years throughout the years. Most students don’t know what causes failure in the exam.

Recently, I met a former examiner of ICAN. In the course of our discussion I ask him, his opinion why students fail their exams and also what makes student perceive ICAN to be a difficult Profession.

His reply was simple. He gently explained to me the causes of failure in the exam. Surprisingly, the causes for student’s failure in their ICAN exams as explained by him where no different from any other profession.

Because I was eager to get to the bottom of why students fail their exams, I went further to probe by asking about the relevance of the examiner’s report in the pathfinder. To him, the examiner’s report are relevant but they do not address the basic reason why students fail.

In this article, I will explain 5 Major Causes of Student Failure in the Exam. They are

Study Material: This is the foundation of study in any exam. If you don’t want to struggle, you should get the right material. You shouldn’t use material that complicates learning for you. This is a professional exam and what you need is a material like the E-Class Video Lectures which lay emphasis on precision and straight to the point explanation and not material that is bulky like an encyclopedia.

Lack of Preparation: most students don’t know how to study for a professional exam. Some student won’t get their study material on time to start early preparation which is very important. Furthermore, some are even afraid to take mock exams serious because they know that they will fail however what they are not aware of is that mock exams helps broaden knowledge and skill by exposing them to likely mistakes they might have made in the exams. Lack of preparation makes you gamble with your success. Hence, prepare early for your exam and solve enough questions to complete the exam preparation process.

Not practicing past questions: preparation for an exam is not to study the material only but also to study series of past questions which will help sharpen your analytical and application. When you practice enough past questions, exam favours you by either repeating questions or setting a prototype. However, we should note that solving past questions should be based on the model used to solve the question. That is, you should attempt to solve the question as if you haven’t seen the solution. Unfortunately, students only study one or two questions when preparing for an exam. However, it is strictly advice that student should study a minimum of 7 questions per topic because it will help broaden your knowledge and triple your chances of success.

Misinterpretation of examiner’s requirement: some student fail because they don’t pay attention to the instruction by reading the instructions carefully so as to understand what the examiner actually wants you to do. For instance, if the examiner instruction is to use method1 for statement of cash flow and a student use method2 even though the final answer is the same when a student use method1, no mark will be awarded for the question. Hence, endeavour to thoroughly read instructions with care.

Examination Approach: the way an answer is provided in non-computational courses sometimes contributes to student’s failure because it causes ambiguity. For instance, if you are instructed to list and explain 5 reasons why outsourcing should be adopted by organization for internal audit function. Firstly, list all the 5 reasons then, proceed to the next line and explain them based on the way they are listed above. This will make your answer clearer and it will give you full mark for your answer.
