How to Answer WAEC 2020 questions correctly

I have been a teacher for so many years and see a lot of mistakes

that students make when answering exam question.

Sometimes it’s not that the students don’t know the answer to the questions

but the problem is the way the questions is answered by the student.

I remembered one day I was invigilating for biology examination,

one of my favorite student shade was in the examination hall

Immediately the exam questions were given to them and they were asked to start

I noticed shade started writing immediately into her answer booklet without a pause to look into the questions and analysis them properly.

From time to time my eyes went to her direction to see how she was doing,

shade didn’t pause for a minute she kept on writing and writing.

After all the exams, her biology teacher walked up to me and told me

about how shade didn’t perform very well.

He said he was surprised because shade is smart and brilliant but

he doesn’t understand what went wrong.

I took a look at her exam script and discovered she didn’t answer the questions

properly as requested by the examiner’

That is why am here to share with you how to understand and

answer questions correctly so you can pass your WAEC exam at one sitting

Below are two exam questions student think means the same thing but

they are actually different and have different approach to answering them.

First word is

  1. DEFINE

The examiner is simply asking you to give a definition to question.

When asked to define, for example in Biology.

It is advisable to write a definition the Examiner is

familiar with and then add other definition with reference

For example when you are asked to define Biology,

you give the general definition

Biology is the science of life. Biologists study the structure,

function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms.

Then

You can add another definition with references like this

According to the department of biology  NTNU

The word biology is derived from the Greek words; bios meaning life

and logo meaning study. And it is defined as the science of life and living organisms.

An organism is a living entity consisting of one cell e.g. bacteria,

or several cells e.g. animals, plants and fungi.

So you do not have to worry about if your book is full or not

Provided you put down the right thing.

  1. EXPLAIN

To explain a question means to define inclusively with your thought or opinion.

This type of questions usually has more marks.

When posed with a question that requires an explanation,

a simple definition is never enough.

Citing other references will be an added advantage because you’re

simply telling the questioner that you understand the topic well

For example

Let look at the definition of government

Government is a group of people that governs a community or unit.

It sets and administers public policy and exercises executive,

political and sovereign power through customs,

and laws within a state.

(then you go further to explain in your own words this will earn you more mark)

Government is a means by which organizational policies are enforced,

as well as a mechanism for determining policy.

Each government has a kind of constitution, a statement of its

governing principles and philosophy.

Am sure you found this tips useful and you will be implementing

it when you are answering questions
